A sexually transmitted disease called STBO is sweeping the country; it's spread by having sex without emotional involvement, and most of its victims are teenagers who make love out of curiosity rather than commitment. While a serum that can treat the disease has been formulated, it's been locked away in an inaccessible government building. A woman hires a man to steal the serum.

THE INNOCENT (1976) Luchino Visconti

La Cinémathèque is thrilled to announce that we will be hosting a live event this month!

Join us on Sunday, April 25th at 2PM for a screening of The Innocent by Luchino Visconti in one of the SOPAC’s movie theaters.

After several misguided projects, Visconti's last film returns to the territory he knew best, and forms a worthy finale to a distinguished career. The plot is understated melodrama: a turn-of-the-century gentleman of leisure indulges all his own extra-marital whims, but is mortified when his wife has an affair; his whole philosophy crumbles as he desperately tries to preserve his self-respect. It's based (faithfully) on a novel by Gabriele D'Annunzio, and Visconti's treatment is much more novelistic than melodramatic: the style is uninflected, and the stately camerawork directs attention to the period manners and environments and the notably convincing characterisations. The film resolves itself into an almost painfully sincere meditation on masculine self-delusion. It has a great performance from Laura Antonelli as the wife, and excellent ones from Giannini and Jennifer O'Neill as husband and lover.

A young mail carrier, Jules (Frederic Andrei), becomes entranced with the voice of American diva Cynthia Hawkins (Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez). She doesn't believe in being recorded, but Jules secretly records her singing on a tape. His recording gets mixed up with another tape that incriminates a police chief, who is working with the mob. Jules quickly becomes the target of mob gangsters, and he must find a way to get himself out of the situation alive.

That is why we are excited to bring you Visionaries: two virtual series taking place over Zoom that will raise funds for New Wave Productions so that we can continue our on-ground programming in 2021!

The Ingmar Bergman event will include a screening of his 1963 film Winter Light.

Soldier and poet Cyrano de Bergerac (Gérard Depardieu) is in love with Roxane (Anne Brochet), but he's too ashamed to admit it because of his big nose. When a cadet, Christian (Vincent Perez), falls for Roxane, he asks for Cyrano's help in sharing his feelings. Cyrano writes love letters signed with Christian's name, and Roxane doesn't realize that it's Cyrano's words she falls for. She marries Christian, and Cyrano continues to keep the other man's secret, even after tragedy strikes.

Geneviève (Catherine Deneuve), a beautiful young Frenchwoman who works at a small-town boutique selling umbrellas, falls for dashing mechanic Guy (Nino Castelnuovo). Their brief romance is interrupted when Guy is drafted to serve in the Algerian War. Though pregnant by Guy, Geneviève marries an older businessman, Roland (Marc Michel), and begins to move on with her life. When he sees 12-year-old Cybele (Patricia Gozzi) stranded at a neighborhood orphanage, he convinces the staff that he's her father, so that they can spend Sunday afternoons together, bonding over their shared loneliness. But their platonic relationship is misinterpreted by Pierre's nurse (Nicole Courcel) and others.

Impoverished priest Harihar Ray (Kanu Bannerjee), dreaming of a better life for himself and his family, leaves his rural Bengal village in search of work. Alone, his wife, Sarbojaya (Karuna Bannerjee), looks after her rebellious daughter, Durga (Uma Das Gupta), and her young son, Apu (Subir Bannerjee), as well as Harihar’s elderly aunt Indir (Chunibala Devi). The children enjoy the small pleasures of their difficult life, while their parents suffer the daily indignities heaped upon them.

Miguel is happily married to Mariela, who is pregnant with their first child, and the couple are well respected in their community and active in the local church. But Miguel is also in love with Santiago, an artist, and the two have secretly been having an affair. Santiago drowns one evening while swimming, and his ghost visits Miguel, telling him that his spirit will not know peace until Miguel finds the courage to tell the community about their love.

Reluctantly taking him in, Dora joins the boy on a road trip to find his long-missing father.

A family living together in a small Northern Italian city. The parents are Giovanni and Paola and their two teenage children are Irene, the daughter, and Andrea, the younger son. A tale of a happy, middle class family which is turned upside down when the teenage son dies in a tragic accident.
